Tathra Wharf

The Wharf has transformed over the years from a small jetty into a large wharf as the needs of the community changed. It was used to by farmers exporting goods to other coastal communities, livestock and others goods. The last freight ship to leave the wharf was in 1954. Today the wharf has been turned into a local icon. It is used regularly as a fishing spot and cafe. The local Tathra Surf Club hold the Wharf to Waves swim race every year starting from the Wharf.

Playa Polo (North Beach)

Welcome to North Beach (Playa Polo). It is a great quiet beach. I found it the be a bit of a walk to the beach from Red Frog. i like how it is the typical Caribbean Island setting with the palm trees hanging over forming some shade for the guests. I found there to be only 6 other people on this amazing beach.

Caldera River

This is Caldera River. This area is known for hot springs. I took a Collectivo taxi to the hot springs with a group of friends. The taxi dropped us off the the ‘end’ of the road and we had to walk 1.5km into a farm. The hot springs are on a private farm. We had two choices to enjoy the springs. One was in the middle of a paddock and the other was by the river. We chose the river. It was a good experience. I took the opportunity to relax before spending the night hiking Vulcan Baru.

Cacao Fruit

This is a near ripe Cacao Fruit. The outside is really hard. Inside the fruit is the Cacao seeds that are used to create chocolate. Around the seeds is a white flesh. It is good to suck on. This is a tree in one of the many Cacao plantations in the Yorkin Community. They have will process the seeds and turn it into powder within their community. A cacao factory is being built through volunteers and corporate donations. The factory will be up and running in the 6 months. This will allow the community to sell the powder for double the price of dry seeds.

Crossing the Border

The caribbean side of Panama and Costa Rica are known for Banana plantations. Back in the late 1800’s American Corporations were growing bananas in this region for the USA. They built a train line to be able to transport the bananas. This photo is of the train line crossing over the border of Panama and Costa Rica. It is not used today. The bananas are now shipped out of Almirante instead.

Cacao Fruit

Cacao is becoming part of the Costa Rican Agriculture. Villages in the Talamanca Region have been growing Cacao trees. They have learnt that the best way to get a good price for the Cacao is by turning it into Cacao powder. The Yorkin village is building a cacao powder factory. They will be able to get double the amount of money because they are processing their own cacao. The dry seeds only got the farmers $4 a kilo. No they can get more money for their produce and the money supports the community not large corporations.

Banana Leaves Waterdrops

This is a banana farm in the south eastern mountains of Costa Rica. Costa Rica grows bananas, pineapples, and coffee.
Bananas use to be grown and exported to the USA. Now the bananas are exported around the world.

Vulcan Concepcíon and Airport

On Ometepe Island there is this airstrip. It is crossed by the main road the goes around the island. When there is a plane landing the road is closed. This woud be a great airport to land at with the view outside your window.

Rio Celeste

Rio Celeste is a found in Costa Rica. The water is naturally blue. This is called the Laguna Azul. The water turns blue because of a chemical reaction. As the two water courses mix it increases the size of aluminosilicate particles. When the sun shines it reflects off the aluminosilicate as blue. When you go to the Tenorio Volcano National Park you can see where the reaction starts and see a blue water fall also.

Pacific Sunset

San Juan Del Sur. It is a beach town community filled with hostels and pubs. It is a great spot to stay or travel through to get to the local beaches that are close by.

This is San Juan Del Sur Bay. It is an amazing place to sit an watch the sun set over the Pacific Ocean.
